Commercial Drainage Components: Follow the Water Path

๐Ÿ“… July 07, 2024 Updated September 6, 2026 ๐Ÿ“ Kitchener-Waterloo, ON

A grate is only one part of a drainage arrangement. A useful enquiry explains where water arrives, where it collects and where the existing route appears to lead.

Document the wet-weather pattern

Photograph pooling during or after rain from a safe location. Mark downspouts, pavement low points, entrances and existing drains. Record whether the concern is new or recurring.

Separate collection from conveyance

NDS describes catch basins as collection devices that connect to drain pipe through appropriate outlets or adapters. Its catalogue also includes channel drains. Product names describe different parts of the route; replacing a surface grate alone does not explain the entire system.

Send a commercial maintenance requestDescribe the work before choosing a date or service scope.

Check the proposed component details

Ask the proposal to identify the basin or channel, grate, pipe connection and intended outlet. Include pedestrian or vehicle use at the location so suitability can be checked against the specific product documentation.

Identify what is not yet known

An existing buried connection may not be visible from a photograph. Mark unknown pipe routes and outlet locations as questions. Ask whether investigation, cleaning or a new drainage arrangement is being proposed.

Send a drainage enquiry

Provide a site sketch, photographs and access information. Explain what the water affects and the areas that must remain usable. Any proposed outlet or connection needs site-specific review before work is agreed.

Questions about this topic

Is a larger grate always the answer to pooling?

The collection point, connections and downstream route all need to be understood. Describe the full observed water path rather than specifying a grate size first.

What if the outlet is unknown?

Say so in the request and identify the visible drain locations. Ask what investigation is needed before a replacement scope is set.
