Parking Lot Striping Best Practices: Maximizing Stalls and Traffic Flow

Thoughtful parking lot layout maximizes stall count and creates safe, efficient traffic flow. Here's what defines best practice.

Parking Lot Maintenance Overview

Parking lot striping is both a regulatory compliance matter and an operational efficiency decision. Getting layout right maximizes the number of usable stalls while creating safe, predictable traffic patterns.

Standard stall dimensions are 2.6-2.75 metres wide by 5.5 metres deep for 90-degree stalls. Angled stalls (45 or 60 degrees) can accommodate more stalls on some lot configurations but require one-way drive aisles.

Why Regular Maintenance Matters

Drive aisle widths must accommodate vehicle turning and two-way traffic where required. 90-degree stall aisles require 6.1 metres minimum for two-way traffic; angled stall aisles with one-way traffic can be narrower.

Accessible stall count requirements scale with total parking supply. Current AODA requirements specify minimum accessible stall counts; verify compliance with current standards, not those in effect at original construction.

Commercial Parking Solutions

Traffic direction markings — arrows, stop bars, yield lines, and crosswalk markings — reduce conflict points and guide drivers through the lot predictably. Poorly marked lots create confusion, congestion, and accident risk.

Paint product selection for stall and traffic markings determines longevity. Traffic grade alkyd or waterborne traffic paint provides better durability than standard architectural paint. Retro-reflective additives improve visibility in low light.

Re-stripe after every sealcoating project. Sealcoating covers all existing markings. A professional re-striping job immediately following sealcoating restores clear, clean markings before the property reopens to traffic.
