Loading Dock Maintenance: Equipment, Aprons and Drainage

Service levellers and restraints by equipment requirements

Obtain the make, model, rated capacity and owner manual for each leveller and restraint. Record the maintenance provider and required servicing schedule. Do not assume one interval applies to all mechanical levellers and another to every hydraulic model. A maintenance programme needs the particular equipment instructions and its use conditions.

Operators should report bent platforms, abnormal movement, fluid leaks, a damaged lip or restraint faults immediately. A defect affecting safe operation calls for the bay to be removed from use and assessed by qualified personnel. Never enter a leveller pit or work beneath a platform without the prescribed isolation, support and safe-work arrangements.

Maintain seals, bumpers and the loading interface

Dock seals and shelters help limit weather entry around a correctly positioned trailer. Track tears, compressed areas and loose attachments by bay. Check whether damage is caused by trailer mismatch or approach geometry before installing another identical replacement.

Inspect bumpers and their fixings after impacts and during planned visits. Missing, displaced or badly deteriorated bumpers warrant an assessment of both the bumper assembly and the building behind it. Doors, guides and adjacent wall areas can be damaged in the same collision.

Keep load transfers within the equipment ratings and the established loading procedure. CCOHS identifies trailer restraint, support and condition as essential loading checks. A maintained leveller alone cannot make an unsecured or damaged trailer safe.

Keep the apron, floor and drainage serviceable

Map ruts, broken concrete and uneven transitions in forklift and trailer paths. Record where water accumulates and whether ponding reaches the dock opening. Patch selection should address the failed material and loading conditions; repeatedly filling a depression without understanding drainage or settlement may leave the cause in place.

Keep drains accessible for inspection and scheduled cleaning. Separate rainfall runoff from spills and wash water: a drain is not permission to dispose of contaminants. Protect the area from further exposure when a spill occurs and use the site’s trained spill response.

Coordinate repairs with receiving staff so closed bays, temporary routes and trailer staging are understood. Before reopening, obtain the equipment contractor’s completion record and verify that access, guards, housekeeping and the loading procedure are restored.
