Bollards range from decorative landscape delineators to impact-rated vehicle barrier systems — selecting the right type for each application requires matching the threat level to the product specification.
Fixed steel pipe bollards are the most common commercial installation. A steel pipe filled with concrete and set in a deep concrete footing provides a vehicle barrier with high impact resistance. Standard commercial bollards (4-inch schedule 40 pipe) can absorb vehicle impact from typical passenger vehicles travelling at low speeds without failure.
Industry Best Practices
Removable bollards allow temporary access to restricted areas. A sleeve system is cast into the concrete footing; the bollard post seats in the sleeve and is locked in position. When temporary access is needed (for events, deliveries, or maintenance), the bollard is unlocked and removed. The sleeve is visually similar to the installed bollard.
Flexible (rubber or plastic) bollards deform on impact and spring back, providing low-damage guidance rather than hard stops. They're appropriate for delineating pedestrian zones, protecting landscape areas from accidental vehicle incursion, and guiding traffic in low-speed areas. They provide no meaningful vehicle barrier function.
How D&D Commercial Services Can Help
ASTM-rated crash-rated bollards are specified for high-security applications requiring certified vehicle barrier performance. These bollards are tested to ASTM F2656 at defined vehicle weights and speeds, with rated penetration limits. They're specified for government facilities, data centres, utilities, and other high-security sites.
Decorative bollards in cast iron, stainless steel, or architectural concrete serve primarily aesthetic and pedestrian delineation functions. They're used in retail plazas, public spaces, and commercial developments where visual integration with the site design is a priority and structural vehicle barrier performance is secondary.
