A blocked or failed catch basin turns a parking lot into a pond โ€” understanding the failure modes and prevention strategies protects your property and operations.

Total blockage from accumulated sediment is the most common catch basin failure mode. As sediment accumulates in the basin sump, it eventually reaches the inlet elevation and prevents further drainage. The next rainfall event, regardless of intensity, produces flooding because there's nowhere for the water to go.

Industry Best Practices

Inlet grate blockage from leaf accumulation, garbage, or ice is a secondary and more sudden failure mode. A catch basin sump that is clean can still flood if the inlet grate is blocked. Seasonal inspection and clearing of grate debris is part of any drainage maintenance program.

Structural failure โ€” cracked basin walls, displaced cover frames, or sunk basins โ€” typically results from vehicle loading over the basin structure. In parking lots, catch basins are periodically driven over by vehicles, including heavy delivery trucks. The basin structure must be capable of carrying HS-20 (or equivalent) vehicle loads without structural damage.

How D&D Commercial Services Can Help

Pipe joint separation in the storm sewer pipe between the catch basin and the municipal connection allows soil infiltration, which can progress to surface subsidence โ€” visible as a sinkhole or depression in the pavement above the pipe. Annual CCTV inspection of the connecting pipe identifies this condition before it becomes a surface failure.

Overflow capacity design: catch basins are designed for a specific return-period storm event (typically 5-year or 10-year return period). Extreme rainfall events that exceed design capacity will produce some flooding regardless of maintenance. Understanding your property's drainage design capacity helps set realistic expectations and plan for overflow pathways during extreme events.
