Bollards protect buildings, pedestrians, and property from vehicle impact — but only if they're properly maintained and structurally sound. Here's what regular inspection should cover.
Visual inspection of each bollard for impact damage should be performed at minimum quarterly for properties with active parking or vehicle traffic. Damage indicators include: deformation of the steel post, cracked or separated anchor base, tilting of the post from true vertical, and significant paint damage or corrosion that may indicate deeper structural compromise.
Industry Best Practices
Foundation condition assessment determines whether a bollard that appears superficially sound is actually anchored correctly. Surface-mounted bollards (anchored to a concrete pad with anchor bolts) should have tight anchor bolt nuts and no cracking or heaving of the concrete pad at the base. Cast-in-place bollards (set in concrete during construction) should be checked for any movement of the post within the concrete.
Impact replacement criteria: a bollard that has sustained a vehicle impact severe enough to cause visible deformation has compromised structural integrity even if it still stands upright. The steel may have internal cracks or the anchor may have shifted in the concrete. These bollards should be replaced, not reinforced with paint or cosmetic treatment.
How D&D Commercial Services Can Help
Reflective banding and cap maintenance maintains the visual conspicuity of bollards in low-light conditions. Yellow retroreflective banding on parking bollards significantly reduces impact incidents by making the bollards visible to drivers. Replace banding that has faded, peeled, or been damaged.
Height requirements: For bollards intended to stop vehicle penetration, minimum effective height is 900 mm (about 36 inches) above finished grade. Shorter bollards may be used for aesthetic delineation but are ineffective for impact prevention. D&D Commercial Services installs and maintains bollards to the minimum height specified by ASTM and insurance requirements.
